What is the YKI test?

YKI stands for Yleiset kielitutkinnot, in English the National Certificates of Language Proficiency. It is a language test for adults, run by the Finnish National Agency for Education (Opetushallitus, OPH). The University of Jyväskylä trains the raters and checks that grading is consistent.

You can take YKI in nine languages: Finnish, Swedish, English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Northern Sámi. Most people who live in Finland take it in Finnish. In the Finnish test, all tasks and instructions are in Finnish only.

YKI measures practical, everyday language. The tasks are about normal adult life: home, shops, work, health and the news. You do not need special vocabulary for any profession.

Three levels and the 1–6 scale

When you register, you choose one level: basic, intermediate or advanced. Each level can give you only two passing grades. The 1–6 scale matches the European CEFR levels A1–C2 (see Finnish CEFR levels).

Test levelPassing gradesCEFRTypical use
Perustaso (basic)1 or 2A1–A2Checking your progress
Keskitaso (intermediate)3 or 4B1–B2Citizenship, many jobs, studies
Ylin taso (advanced)5 or 6C1–C2Demanding jobs, expert roles

Pick the level carefully. If your result is below the level you chose, the certificate says alle 3 (below 3) for that part. It does not show a lower grade. For citizenship, most people take the intermediate test.

The four parts of the test

Every YKI test has four parts, called subtests (osakokeet). Each one gets its own grade. There is no single overall grade.

SubtestFinnish nameWhat you do
Readingtekstin ymmärtäminenRead messages, ads, news and articles, then answer questions
WritingkirjoittaminenWrite three different texts, such as a message, a letter or an opinion
Listeningpuheen ymmärtäminenListen to announcements, conversations and news, then answer questions
SpeakingpuhuminenSpeak into a microphone: answer, react to situations, give opinions

The basic and intermediate tests take about five hours with breaks; the advanced test takes about six. You do reading and writing in a classroom. Listening and speaking usually happen in a language studio, where your speech is recorded. In the Finnish and Swedish basic tests, speaking is an interview. The advanced test also includes a face-to-face interview.

Topics you can expect

OPH lists the same topic areas for every level. Only the difficulty changes.

  • Me and my background (minä ja taustani)
  • Home and housing (koti ja asuminen)
  • Shops and services (kauppa ja palvelut)
  • Culture (kulttuuri)
  • Travel (matkustaminen)
  • Health and well-being (terveys ja hyvinvointi)
  • Work (työ)
  • Environment (ympäristö)
  • Society (yhteiskunta)

How scoring works

Reading and listening answers get points, and the points are turned into a grade. Writing and speaking are graded by trained raters against fixed descriptions of each level. They compare your answer with the level description, not with other test takers.

Results take about two months. If your test day was on or after 1 April 2026, you can get a digital certificate in the Oma Opintopolku service, if you gave a Finnish personal identity code and use Suomi.fi Messages. Otherwise the paper certificate comes by post.

A YKI certificate does not expire. Still, an employer may test you again if the certificate is old.

How to register

  1. Decide why you need the certificate and which level and subtests that purpose requires.
  2. Find a test date on OPH's YKI pages. Registration usually opens about two months before the test day, always at 10:00.
  3. Register on the YKI registration site. Log in with Suomi.fi, or with email if you cannot use Suomi.fi.
  4. Pay with the payment link you get by email before the deadline. Your place is confirmed only after payment.
  5. Wait for the test centre's instructions about time and place, which arrive close to the test day.

Places in the Finnish intermediate test fill up fast. Be online when registration opens. If the test is full, you can join a queue during the registration period.

Fees at the time of writing

In October 2026, OPH lists these fees. Check the official page before you register, because fees can change.

Test levelFee
Basic165 €
Intermediate190 €
Advanced216 €

Since 1 January 2026, the advanced Finnish and Swedish tests can be free if you have passed the Finnish matriculation exam (or a similar foreign exam), or if you have, or are studying for, a higher education degree. You can register for free up to three times. All other tests are paid.

Rules that changed in 2026

  • A paid registration is binding. You cannot move it to another date, level, language or test centre.
  • You can get a refund only if you are ill, you have a medical certificate, you cancel by 8:00 on the test morning, and you apply within two weeks of the test day.
  • Bring a valid official ID: passport, ID card, residence permit card or alien's passport. A driving licence is not accepted.
  • Phones, smartwatches and dictionaries are not allowed, even during breaks.

What is new in 2026 and 2027

OPH is testing new formats. On 16 September 2026 it ran its first subtest day for the Finnish intermediate test, where people could take only writing and listening. In November 2026, it is piloting a digital YKI test, taken on a computer at a test centre, in a few places. OPH says the Finnish and Swedish YKI tests will move to digital from the start of 2027. Check oph.fi for the latest details before you register.

How YKI results are used

  • Citizenship: grade 3 or higher in certain pairs of subtests. See Finnish citizenship language requirement.
  • Permanent residence: since 8 January 2026, most permanent residence applicants must prove Finnish or Swedish skills. Migri (migri.fi) says which level applies to you.
  • Jobs: in public-sector jobs, satisfactory Finnish can be shown with grade 3 and good Finnish with grade 4 in the intermediate test. Private employers set their own rules.
  • Studies: schools and universities decide what they accept. Ask them directly.

OPH does not decide what a result is good for. Whoever asks for your certificate decides if it is enough.

How to prepare

  • Read the official task descriptions and sample tasks linked from oph.fi, so nothing surprises you.
  • Practise all four skills, not just grammar. Each part is graded separately.
  • Speak out loud every day. Many learners read well but freeze when they have to speak. See YKI speaking test tips.
  • Write short texts on the nine topics: a complaint, an email to a landlord, your opinion on public transport.
  • Listen to slow and normal-speed Finnish news and radio.
  • Always answer something. An empty answer cannot get any points.

These phrases help in both writing and speaking:

Minun mielestäni etätyö on hyvä asia.

In my opinion, remote work is a good thing.

Toisaalta se voi olla yksinäistä.

On the other hand, it can be lonely.

Esimerkiksi minä asun kaukana työpaikastani.

For example, I live far from my workplace.

Lopuksi haluaisin sanoa, että molemmissa on hyvät puolensa.

Finally, I'd like to say that both have their good sides.

Practise with Maija

Maija is a Finnish speaking tutor in an app. She holds spoken classes from Pre-A1 to C2, listens to your answers, and gently corrects you. She also offers YKI-style speaking practice with feedback. Maija is not connected to OPH and cannot promise a result, but daily speaking helps on test day. Start with take the free level check to see where you are now.
